If Iraqi reports are accurate, the leader of Al-Qaeda in Iraq, Abu Ayyub al-Masri has been killed in a firefight north of Baghdad by Sunni insurgents. Although the report has not been confirmed by US intelligence, Iraqi officials claimed to have seen the body. al-Masri filled the leadership vacuum left when US forces killed Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in June of 2006.
