Heroism and loyalty unveiled...shown to us by a young man who realized what the consequences of in-action would be and a man who knew the costs and outcome of his actions yet chose to undertake it. This is Gunner's Mate Second Class Danny Dietz, United States Navy SEALs and he gave his life for a friend, for a country...for you and me.In June of 2005, Dietz and members of his unit were on a SR (Special Reconnaissance) mission to locate an enemy leader in Afghanistan. Enemy sympathizers informed the enemy of their position and Dietz and his team were taken under heavy fire by the enemy who vastly outnumbered the SEALs and attacked from an elevated position.
The SEAL unit called for assistance and while en route to the scene, a military helo carrying eight additional SEAL members was hit by gunfire and crashed, killing all eight SEALS and eight 160th SOAR Nightstalker aviators.
Members of Dietz's team were wounded and Dietz urged them to escape while he covered them. Dietz continued to battle the enemy and provide cover to his teammates. Dietz was struck and mortally wounded but he continued to fight. Dietz died, giving his life for a friend. His death is representative of the all soldiers who fight on foreign soil, some never to return home. They do it for each other and for all of us.
Dietz was awarded the Navy Cross for his valor. He is a recent addition to a long list of great Americans who realized that freedom and your fellow man are noble reasons to give your life.
