In Pat Buchanan’s book, “Where the Right Went Wrong”, he clearly opposes the war in Iraq and to the un-informed reader, his points are powerful and persuasive. However, he basis his opinions on current conflicts and how they affect America now, failing to interpret what consequences we will face in the future.
He provides an historical foundation that concludes isolationism is the best defense and terrorism and insurgency always prove to be successful. Successful not because they can win the traditional military engagement but rather because they have the drive and ability to fight un-conventional warfare and grind down their opponent until they give up.
Obviously, the United States with the support of many around the world, had the justifiable right to bring swift justice to the Taliban for their roles in the 9/11 attacks. However, Buchanan claims that Iraq was a failed and un-justifiable mission from the beginning. Buchanan cites numerous intelligence failures in the pre-Iraq War days, all of which, in my opinion, can be argued. He also cites where American diplomacy is cementing our future in failure, specifically how our relationship with Israel and our ignorance of China will be the downfall of the United States.
According to Buchanan, Neo-Conservatives in the federal government subjugate themselves to the will and needs of Israel. I do not in any way consider myself a Neocon but I do pledge support to Israel within reason. What many fail to recognize is our commitment to a peaceful world, the spread of democracy and freedom and watching the backs of our friends.
Israel is our only true ally in the Middle East. We claim positive relationships with Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, etc but the fact is all are in bed with their Islamic neighbors. Only Israel can be depended upon to stand with the United States in the war on Islamic extremism. They have not been corrupted with Muslim influence and are willing to fight for what is righteous.
If we dis-continue our support of Israel, Israel with be consumed with war and although powerful, I fear it would eventually fall. Without Israel, as a western democratic influence, the Middle East would consume all of its moderate neighbors into Islamic extremism. Radical Islam would spread to the corners of the earth as it is already doing in Africa and Europe. Only the United States and a few small allies would be left to fight that war. A war made even tougher because of homegrown Islamic terrorist living here in America this very day.
As nice as isolationism sounds, I believe we must choose our battles carefully, fight the good fight and protect those who stand behind us when the tuff times come. Remember what America sacrificed in World War II and what would have happened if we sat at home any longer.
